The instructor entered the room. She was a tall, slender, in-shape teacher. She was kind to say to everyone,“You can take a rest and get some water anytime.” After counting the number of students and taking down their names, the yoga class begins. I had never done hot yoga before; even regular yoga was something I had never experienced. Yoga is similar to stretching, but somehow its poses are more mysterious and exotic. Maybe this is due to the fact that yoga came from India which I believe to still be a somewhat mysterious place for most people. The class started with a very basic pose emphasizing proper breathing technique. The total time for the class was 90 minutes. We went through various poses designed to stretch each body part. Shoulder, arms, back, stomach, legs…etc. All of my body parts were gradually stretched and I felt so calm and relaxed. The class was in such a dark room that it helped me to relax quite easily. One additional thing I want to mention is that yoga has a strong focus on balance. There were several poses in which I had to stand on one leg. This was really difficult. Some skilled people were standing like a crane. Mine was more like an elephant. While I was struggling, the room was still extremely hot and humid. Sweat was pouring out of me like a flood. The intense sweating was quite comfortable to me and it felt good. In fact, I probably lost more sweat than I ever have in my life there.
After the class, I came out of the class room and looked at the sky. It was still the same rainy Wonderland in the middle of the day. However, something felt very different. My body felt light, hot, and wonderful. My friends were not lying about hot yoga. Hot yoga was well worth the experience.
